Level 2 — Integration Engineer (INTEGRATE)
Level 2 certifies that an engineer can solve real integration problems: multi-protocol integration, data types and byte order, network basics and structured fault finding under exam conditions.
Level 1 means the engineer can use the product. Level 2 means the engineer can solve real engineering problems.
Level 2 is expected to be the most important MILESGO certification: it is the level at which an engineer can be trusted to deliver a protocol integration project on their own.
Prerequisites
- Level 1 certification, or equivalent professional experience accepted by MILESGO review
- Recommended: at least 6 months of work in building automation, industrial automation or IIoT
Protocols
Working command of all of the following:
- Modbus RTU
- Modbus TCP
- BACnet/IP
- BACnet MS/TP
Plus at least two of the following protocols or technologies (the list will grow over time):
- MQTT
- OPC UA
- SNMP
- KNX
- LoRaWAN
- M-Bus
- Siemens S7
- EtherNet/IP
- IEC 60870-5-104
Networking
- TCP/IP
- VLAN basics
- Static IP and DHCP
- Ports
- Firewall basics
- RS-485 network design
Data representation
- Register
- Object
- Point
- Data type
- Scaling
- Byte order
- Word order
- Float
- Integer
- Boolean
- Enumeration
This area matters: in many projects the real problem is a data type, a scaling factor or a byte / word order, not the protocol itself.
Typical integrations the engineer must be able to complete
- Modbus RTU → BACnet/IP
- Modbus TCP → MQTT
- SNMP → BACnet
- LoRaWAN → BACnet
- PLC → OPC UA / MQTT
Fault diagnosis
The engineer must be able to identify the cause of the following faults. This part carries a high weight in the exam.
Modbus
- Timeout
- CRC error
- Wrong slave address
- Wrong baud rate
- Wrong register
- Wrong data type
BACnet
- Device cannot be discovered
- Device instance conflict
- BBMD problems
- MS/TP MAC address conflict
- MS/TP baud rate problems
Network
- Ping fails
- Port blocked or wrong
- IP address conflict
- Routing problems
A good integration engineer is not the one who can configure; it is the one who knows where to look when it does not work.
Level 2 exam
Part | Weight | Content |
|---|---|---|
A — Theory | 30% | Protocols, networking, data representation |
B — Practical configuration | 40% | Complete a multi-protocol integration in the lab |
C — Fault diagnosis | 30% | Find and fix faults deliberately introduced into a working system |
Example task: a Modbus device returns no data. Find the cause within 30 minutes.
Pass criteria
- Total score of at least 80%
- Practical parts (B and C) of at least 80%
